Sick of the cold weather? How about the short days, long nights and inevitable post-Christmas burnout? Here at team Mastercuts, we’re all about feeling fabulous and we absolutely hate the January blues – which is why we’ve decided to publish the ultimate feel-good guide.

Read on to discover the best ways to destress, unwind and enjoy the new year. We promise you won’t be disappointed!

1. Get Outside

According to the experts, natural sunlight is one of the best cures for seasonal depression. So many of your body’s complex internal systems rely on a healthy dose of sunlight, but a combination of cold weather and short days force most of us to spend the winter months indoors, and this plays hell with your body’s internal chemistry.

To remedy the situation, scientists recommend spending an extra 20-30 minutes outdoors (preferably in the sunshine, but we know that’s a big ask for anyone living in the northern hemisphere). Doing this should help to re-energize your body and you should find that your mood starts to lift as your body resumes production of vitamin D, serotonin and other (equally important) hormones.

2. Detox your hair

Noticed that you feel better when your hair’s clean? That’s no coincidence. In fact, there’s a strong link between the health of your hair, your self esteem and your mood – with scientists discovering that 44% of women feel better when their hair is squeaky clean. Sadly keeping your hair in tip-top condition can be a challenge – particularly if you’re using a shampoo that builds up in your hair, or straightening your hair every day.

One solution is a proper hair detox; using a salon-quality treatment to replenish, clean and rejuvenate every single strand. This will banish build-up and leave your hair looking a million dollars. It’ll also provide a big boost to your self-esteem and make your hair that much easier to style and maintain as we move forward into the new year.

Call into your local salon and one of our expert stylists will talk you through a deep conditioning treatment. They’ll also be able to pick out the high-quality products you’ll need to detox from the comfort of your own home – like Amika’s super-rejuvenating Reset scalp cleansing treatment.

3. Try something new

It’s no secret that trying something new can help fight depression. In fact, numerous studies show that breaking your routine can be hugely beneficial to your mental health; lending you some much-needed perspective, and getting your creative juices flowing.

You don’t have to go all-out either. Studies published in the UK show that simple things like recoloring your hair can have a huge impact. You could also try experimenting with a new skin treatment (we’d recommend Dermologica’s Sleep Cocoon mask ), learning a new language or even taking up a new sport. The list is endless, but if you fancy trying out a new cut or color, our stylists would be happy to assist. Just book an appointment at your nearest Mastercuts salon and let them break you out of that January funk with a bold new style!

4. Self Reflect

It sounds simple, but taking the time to sit down and reflect on your life can be hugely beneficial. According to experts, it’s a good idea to reflect once every couple of days; asking yourself whether you’ve indulged in enough self-care or taken the time to really pamper yourself.

If the answer to these questions is no (and we’re betting it is, because we’re exactly the same!) You’ll be pleased to hear that the solution to your January woes is actually pretty simple: Just set aside some time to focus on yourself, and restore your sense of wellbeing. This could involve sitting down to read a book, or pampering yourself with a salon-quality beauty treatment.

We’d strongly recommend a luxurious hair mask like Matrix Toner Mask (if you’re blonde) or Amika’s deeply-rejuvenating Reset scalp cleansing treatment. A deep conditioning treatment at your local Mastercuts salon will also do the trick, and our expert stylists will be able to recommend suitable products so that you can pamper at home too.

5. Set realistic resolutions

Believe it or not, New Year’s resolutions can actually be super-beneficial in their own right. According to scientific studies, goal-setting behaviours actually help to focus your mind and distract you from negative thoughts, but there is a slight catch. If you set yourself an achievable resolution (as so many of us do) there’s actually a real risk that you’ll create a bit of a negative thought cycle when you fall short, and fail to achieve your lofty ambitions.

This means that realistic resolutions are key. Try to give yourself short- and long-term goals that you can achieve, then focus on your successes. If you can manage this delicate balancing act, there’s every chance that your New Year’s resolution should provide you with a steady stream of positive energy.

Instead of – say – promising to be bold and make transition from black to platinum hair in one sitting, try focusing on a more general aim like going a few shades lighter,  trying out a bold new style (of any description) or experimenting with a brand new shampoo.

6. Re-hydrate

Rehydration may also be the key to fighting off those January blues. Winter is notoriously drying – partially because every indoor space is full of hot, dry air, but also because of the stiff winds and freezing temperatures. By January, this cocktail of unfriendly conditions can leave the very best of us with dry, limp or wispy hair and you know what that hurts? Your self-esteem and (according to scientists) your general mood.

The best remedy? Our stylists say that a good shampoo or hair mask is your best bet. Something like Amika’s Kure shampoo or Redken’s All Soft range which is designed to heal your hair’s cuticle layer, and lock moisture into the cortex. If you want some hands-on advice, just book an appointment at your local Mastercuts salon and our expert stylists will be able to help you out in person.

7. Exercise

It definitely doesn’t sound appealing, but it’s a fact that exercise can help us to shake off those January blues. Whether it’s a brisk walk or a session in the gym, science has shown us that 20-30 minutes of moderate cardio prompts the body to produce “happy hormones” like serotonin. Moderate exercise has also been shown to help reset your circadian rhythms, which means that you’ll sleep better and feel more rested.

Basically, it’s a win-win. Just make sure that you pick up a good shampoo and wash your hair after every session, otherwise you run the risk of developing itchy scalp syndrome. Our stylists recommend something like Redken’s All Soft Shampoo which is packed with deeply cleansing ingredients. You can also follow up with something like Morroocan’s classic Oil Treatment if you want to keep your hair in tip-top condition.

8. Book  Holiday

Yep; you read that right. Booking a holiday is a perfectly valid way to bust those January blues. Turns out that sitting down to browse destinations, scout out hotels and tally up ticket prices can (genuinely) remedy low mood. In fact, a recent study showed that planning a holiday was as exciting as getting engaged (for 40% of us at least) and that’s all the evidence we need to start planning!

Thing is, it does make sense. After all, the anticipation of an upcoming getaway is enough to make anyone giddy and it stands to reason that planning your getaway would help to put the current sitch into perspective. Just make sure that you remember some holiday hair-care essentials! If you’re jetting off somewhere warm you have to pack some of Moroccanoil’s famous Oil Treatment, and a good hydrating shampoo will help to keep your hair beach-ready without drying it out.

Beaches are especially drying, but Alpine ski holidays and even city breaks can really do a number on your hair so if you’re struggling to work out what you’ll need, pop over to your nearest Mastercuts salon and ask our expert stylists to help you out.

9. Relax with a hair mask

As mentioned before, pamper time is known to have a positive impact on your mental health. Relaxing with a salon-quality hair mask will also rejuvenate and replenish your hair; providing a handy boost to your self esteem. According to our stylists, a luxurious mask like Amika’s Reset scalp cleansing treatment is your best bet, as it takes about 30 minutes to work its way into your hair, and it also provides a host of nourishing ingredients.

Ultimately, the choice is yours – just make sure that you give yourself time to relax and unwind while your chosen treatment works its magic. Our stylists can give you a deeply conditioning hair treatment too; just pop into your local salon to see if there’s a slot available, or call them up to book an appointment.

10. Book some me time at your local salon

Finally, it’s worth pointing out that a proper, pre-planned pamper session is one of the best ways to relax and unwind. No matter what’s got you down, kicking back in the chair while our expert stylists wash, trim, color or style your hair will never fail to put a smile on your face. You’ll be pleased to know that we can do it all too: Irrespective of whether you want to try out a brand new color or just lie back while we pamper your hair, you’ll find the perfect treatment waiting just down the road.

Use our salon finder to locate your local Mastercuts, then book an appointment and let us banish those January blues. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed!
